Through Amandio's association with the Lusito School and the Portuguese community a request for our company to become involved in this community initiative was realised when Alchemy Architects agreed to assist in the design, co-ordination of other volunteer professionals and negotiate with suppliers for the donation of building materials required to construct this project.
Klipspruit West where Saint Ives Primary School is situated just south of Soweto remains an impoverished community where the majority of its inhabitants are unemployed. The vision of this development was for the community to help themselves by contributing labour and time and intern on the job training such as bricklaying together with other trades could be transferred to the community and as a result alleviate the poverty in the area. On completion of this hall further life skill development would take place.
The design of the structure is relatively simple envisaged as a steel portal framed structure with a 'monitor' type center skylight along the length of the main roof. Semi face brick infill panel walls to the perimeter together with large windows and strip lighting for natural light and ventilation aid in making the design of this building a sustainable maintenance free structure.
