The clients brief apart from the internal upgrade required that a double garage together with a new entertainment area with swimming pool be constructed to the front portion of the property. Orientation of the entertainment area was limited to the front portion of the property as the body of the house faced north towards Dunvegan Avenue.
Retaining the original character of the house was important, thus the new outdoor entertainment roof structure was designed to tie into and match that of the existing. The timber support posts on steel base pins provide a contemporary connection to that of the interior. As the front of the property has a natural fall the outside entertainment area could be elevated from the swimming pool and sun bathing area. Transparency and openness was achieved with the use of large sliding doors from the interior of the house towards the new covered entertainment patio. The garage retained a human scale with the roof appearing to float over a strip of fan lights to the perimeter of the garage. Positioning of the garage was limited to the west of the property and sunken to street level allowing afternoon sun to filter over the garage structure into the external entertainment area and the study room.
