A three bedroom home located within Marloth Park a suburb situated in the Mpumalanga Lowveld neighbouring The Kruger National Park. This unfenced development allows for the free movement of animals and keeps its natural bushveld environment.
Site Constraints & Environmental Concerns
There were three restrictions that determined the design of this house; firstly the location of existing trees on the site. Secondly all natural movements of roaming animals could not be interrupted and thirdly the use of materials.
Design Principles
The house is designed to fit the notion of “outside in and inside out”. The main focus of the house is its large patio with a private Boma. Although the house is only 170m˛ all the rooms have a spacious feel all, privately, gaining access to the outside parkland. The Park is surrounded with Leadwood and Amarula trees, protected from removal; this determined the overall shape of the house. The house faces the South-West to take advantage of the view of the neighbouring Parkland. Natural materials such as thatch for roofing, timber for the roof structure sourced within the park grounds and natural pigmented wall finishes have been proposed.
