Project Overview
This facility planned as a place of assembly for church gatherings allows seating for 3000 people, Sunday school classes for 100 children, administrative offices and a small apartment for the pastor. The location of this development situated within an economically sensitive area of Khayelitsha, Cape Town was to serve as a refuge from the daily strives of the community it is to serve.

Design Principles
The overall construction was briefed as a ‘shed’ structure constructed within the guidelines of the clients Identity Principles. The new building is to be positioned to the south-western corner of the property close to the boundary with Steve Biko Road. The building was positioned as a buffer between the residential area to the north and the noisy Steve Biko Road to the south.

Simple construction methods were adopted so that involvement of the local community supplying both skilled and unskilled labour could be achieved. The ‘shed’ structure consists of a steel portal structure with load bearing cement block work sourced from the area.

Site Constraints
The Cape flats of Khayelitsha are exactly that, virtually flat ground beach like soil. Orientation of the church is east west.
